"Director Jeff Blitz's riveting, inspiring documentary resembles a Christopher Guest movie in that it follows obsessed, socially awkward folks on a seminal journey in their lives."
-- Carla Meyer, San Francisco Chronicle. Read this review.

Eight determined, ambitious souls in eight distinctive packages. Eight children with one goal: to get the last word.

Meet Angela, a Texan whose parents were illegal immigrants from Mexico who barely speak English; Ashley, an African-American girl being raised by a single mother; Emily and Ted, more privileged than most, but no less determined; April, the quiet daughter of a working-class couple from Pennsylvania, perhaps the only one without pushing parents; Neil and Nupur, technology-savvy Indian-American kids, one of whom has hundreds back in India praying for his victory; and Harry, the class clown of the group. These kids will compete with 240 other students for the top prize in the 1999 National Spelling Bee.

Pick your favorite speller and root for them to win, in the ultimate sports event for intellectuals. Most of them are in high school now, so even if they don't win, you might just end up meeting them at MIT in a year or two.

In English, but with some particularly obscure vocabulary.
