The tempestuous winds in La Mancha are said to make its denizens insane; they are also alleged to have caused the wildfires that, years ago, orphaned Raimunda (Penelope Cruz) and Sole (Lola Dueñas). Raimunda now lives a workaday life in Madrid but her routine is about to be seriously destabilized: around the same time that she finds herself in a crisis involving her daughter Paula (Yohana Cobo) and her deadbeat husband, Raimunda’s long-dead mother, Irene (Carmen Maura), begins making appearances in their hometown. Sure enough, Irene shows up – her hilarious first appearance is one of the films many highlights – and is soon setting about righting some wrongs she was unable to redress before.

Pedro Almodóvar is an innovative master of sophisticated cinema, with an impeccable knack for combining humour and pathos. The sensational Penélope Cruz, his muse in All About My Mother, has blossomed into one of her generation’s finest actors; formidably sexy, she projects battle-weary intelligence and a delicious sense of fun. These two have collaborated on one of the year’s most inspired films, a funny, heartbreaking gift to audiences worldwide. [www.torontointernationalfilmfestival.ca]

The Spanish master brings his own story to the screen with intense emotion, vivid characterization (so rare in too many of his colleagues) and a marvellous sense of magic...
