Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) (PG) 152 minutes

You've read the book... now see it on the big screen. Based on the J.K. Rowling books that have started a phenomenon, this film adaptation follows the adventures of the book's young hero - Harry Potter. Harry learns upon his 11th birthday that he is the orphaned son of two powerful wizards and has some interesting powers of his own. He leaves a life of disenchantment and despair to an exciting trek to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Having lost his parents at a young age, Harry makes a family of the close circle of friends at school. This magical and fantastical group of friends join Harry to unravel the mystery of his parents' death and confront the forces intent on destroying him. MPAA: Rated PG for some scary moments and mild language.

This French thriller, based on a true story and set in 18th Century France, follows the legend of the Beast of the Gevaudan, a being that is attacking women and children. The Chevalier de Fronsac and his native American friend Mani are sent by the King to the Gevaudan province to investigate the killings by the mysterious beast. The attacks have been happening for months and no one has been able to even get a look the beast, let alone try to devise a plan to stop it. The Chevalier finds that he will not only have to deal with the Beast, but also ignorance, bigotry and conspiracy of the members of the village. (French with subtitles) MPAA: Rated R for strong violence and gore, and sexuality/nudity.

Matt Fowler is a doctor practicing in his native Maine and is married to New York born Ruth, a choral music teacher. Their only child, Frank, is home from school for the summer, working part time as a lobsterman to earn money for graduate school in the fall. He's also involved in a love affair with a local single mother, which throws his parents for a loop. As the beauty of Maine's brief and fleeting summer comes to an end, these characters find themselves in the midst of unimaginable tragedy. MPAA: Rated R for some violence and language.
