Insomnia (2002) (R)
Tuesday April 30, 8pm in 26-100
Director: Christopher Nolan (Memento). Sent from the city to investigate the murder of a teenage girl in a small Alaska town, a police detective (Al Pacino) accidentally shoots his own partner while trying to apprehend a suspect (Robin Williams). Instead of admitting his guilt, the detective is given an unexpected alibi, but this "solution" only multiplies the emotional complexity and guilt over his partner's death. He's also still got a murder mystery to solve, in addition to the blackmail and framing of an innocent bystander being orchestrated by the man they were chasing. There's also a local detective (Hilary Swank) who is conducting her own personal investigation of his partner's death. Rated R for language, some violence and brief nudity. Gosford Park (2001) (R) 137 minutes
Friday May 3, 7pm and 10:30pm in 26-100
Sunday May 5, 7pm in 26-100
It is November 1932. Gosford Park is the magnificent country estate to which Sir William McCordle and his wife, Lady Sylvia, gather relations and friends for a weekend shooting party. They have invited an eclectic group including a countess, a World War I hero, the British matinee idol Ivor Novello and an American film producer who makes Charlie Chan movies. As the guests assemble in the gilded drawing rooms above, their personal maids and valets swell the ranks of the house servants in the teeming kitchens and corridors below-stairs. But all is not as it seems: neither amongst the bejeweled guests lunching and dining at their enormous leisure, nor in the attic bedrooms and stark work stations where the servants labor for the comfort of their employers. Part comedy of manners and part mystery, the tale portrays events that bridge generations, class, sex, tragic personal history--and culminate in a murder (or is it two murders...?). MPAA: Rated R for some language and brief sexuality.

Windtalkers (2002) (R)
Tuesday May 7, 8pm in 26-100
Director John Woo. On December 8, 1941, the United States declared war on Japan. For the next several years, U.S. forces were fully engaged in battle throughout the Pacific, taking over islands one by one in a slow progression towards mainland Japan. During this brutal campaign, the Japanese were continually able to break coded military transmissions, dramatically slowing U.S. progress. In 1942, several hundred Navajo Americans were recruited as Marines and trained to use their language as code. Marine Joe Enders (Nicolas Cage) is assigned to protect Ben Yahzee (Adam Beach) - a Navajo code talker, the Marines' new secret weapon. Enders' orders are to protect his code talker, but if Yahzee should fall into enemy hands, he's to "protect the code at all costs." Against the backdrop of the horrific battle of Saipan, when capture is imminent, Enders is forced to make a decision: if he can't protect his fellow Marine, can he bring himself to kill him to protect the code? The Navajo code was the only one never broken by the Japanese, and is considered to have been key in winning the war. Also featuring Christian Slater and Frances O'Connor. Rated R for pervasive graphic war violence, and for language. Tickets available to MIT/Wellesley ID holders in Lobby 16 at 6pm

(Unrated) 203 minutes
REPLACED WITH
Rashomon (1950) (Unrated) 88 minutes
Wednesday May 8, 7pm in 26-100
Set in the 11th century, Rashomon opens with a woodcutter, a priest, and a commoner sheltering from torrential rain in an immense dilapidated wooden structure. This structure, known as Rashomon gate, marks one of the approaches to Kyoto. As the three men wait for the weather to improve, they talk about a legal proceeding stemming from an incident involving a possible murder. A samurai was found dead, and the circumstances surrounding his death are shown from four conflicting points of view. Since there is not enough information in the movie to figure out the truth about what took place on the day of the samurai's death the viewer is left to wonder and contemplate the differences in how people perceive the same external event. (Akira Kurosawa, Japan)
