Wednesday, April 22 Fun, Bar, Karaoke (1997)

Free and open to the public. Fun, Bar, Karaoke (Thailand 1997) takes place in Bangkok. Although as cosmopolitan and modern as cities like Tokyo and New York, people still turn to fortune-tellers for help and frequent K araoke bars to fill up the spiritual emptiness. A study as well as a satire of the co-existence of modernity and superstition, Fun, Bar, Karaoke is director Penek Ratanaruang's debut feature film. Presented in 35mm film format. But the breakup of his marriage initiates a serious mid-life crisis. In an attempt to regain his spiritual peace, he goes back to his childhood dream, in which he is at peace with everyday pleasures and surrounding environment. Free and open to the public. 12 Storeys (Singapore, 1997) takes place in one of Singapore's Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats. At times very funny and at other times emotional and explosive, 12 Storeys draws parallels between the lives of three families who are visited by the ghost of a young man who recently committed suicide by jumping from his building. The film, directed by emerging young filmmaker Eric Khoo, just won the grand prize at the Hawaii International Film Festival. Presenter in 35mm film format. In A Single Spark (Korea, 1996), award-winning filmmaker Park Kawang-su, hailed as the leader of Korean new wave cinema, tells the story of the life and death of Korea's labor union martyr, Chon T'ae-il, who immolated himself at the age of 22. While the subject matter is astutely political, framed through the perspective of a writer who tries to reconstruct the martyrUs life, the film breaks down the stereotyped convention of biographical filmmaking, and can be seen as the writer's own journey to spiritual reflection. Western hero, Gary Cooper, takes an introspective turn as a town sheriff who must face the most difficult challenge of his life on his last day on the job. Despite a desire to put aside his violent career by leaving town with his new bride, Cooper is brought up short by news that a gang of viscious outlaws will ride into town at noon, in a hunt for revenge. Although urged to run by both his bride and his former mistress, and abandoned by his deputies and town leaders, he wants to fulfill his duty to protect the town, even if it might mean losing his last hope of domestic happiness.

In this humorous and scathingly satirical film, the president is accused of sexual misconduct with a Firefly Girl on the eve of an election. He'll only win if the news doesn't get out, so he calls Robert De Niro, a scalawag political operator expert in diverting the public's attention with fabricated crises, but the looming scandal is so big that De Niro needs outside help from an eccentric but gifted Hollywood producer (Dustin Hoffman) and a presidential aide (Anne Heche) whose ethics are as situational as his own. Their conclusion: time to manufacture a U.S. war in the Balkans, using state- of-the-art computer imaging to sway public opinion.

This enchanting fairy tale, the first release from Fox Animation Studio, tells the story of Princess Anastasia (Meg Ryan), heir to the Russian Romanov dynasty, who, in this telling, survives a curse cast on her family by the evil sorcerer Rasputin (Christopher Lloyd). Anastasia is a modern-day, spunky heroine; precocious as a child, she grows up to become an independent, self-confident woman with a quick wit. Raised as an orphan, she remembers nothing of her heritage but is led to Paris by two con men (John Cusack and Kelsey Grammer) seeking to collect the reward offered by her grandmother (Angela Lansbury).
