Thursday, February 19 Readings in Science Fiction: Samuel Delaney & Octavia Butler movie picture
In the first of the Readings in Science Fiction lectures, Samuel Delaney (author of Dhalgren and Triton) and Octavia Butler (Hugo and Nebula award winner and author of Kindred and Dawn) will read selections from their works and take questions from audience members. Also sponsored by the Media in Transition project, the Department of Writing and Humanistic Studies, and Women's Studies. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Friday, February 20 Throne of Blood (1957)
Toshiro Mifune takes the lead in this striking and darkly gripping rendition of MacBeth that is regarded as one of the best performances of the play. It is also one of director Kurosawa's finest dramatic works. This version of the familiar story of an ambitious lord who is swept away by destiny is cast in feudal Japan, where mysticism and murder control the fate of the empire. In Japanese with English subtitles.

In & Out (1997) movie picture

Howard Brackett (Kevin Kline), a small-town high school English teacher, is wrongly outed as gay by a former student (Matt Dillon) who wins an Oscar for his portrayal of a gay war hero and cites Brackett as his inspiration. Comedy ensues in Brackett's private life and throughout town as he works to stop the rumors that are upsetting his fiancee (Joan Cusack), mother (Debbie Reynolds), and the school principal (Bob Newhart). His troubles are compounded by the flood of reporters, one of whom (Tom Selleck) is gay and interested in more than just the story.

Seven Years in Tibet (1997) movie picture

Heinrich Harrer (Brad Pitt) journeys to climb the Himalayas, leaving his pregnant wife behind in Austria. War breaks out while he's gone, and he is placed in a prisoner-of-war camp. Harrer escapes to Tibet where he befriends the young Dalai Lama and watches as the Tibetan/Chinese confrontation escalates.
