Cries and Whispers (1972) Directed by Ingmar Bergman. Starring Liv Ullman, Harriet Andersson, Ingrid Thulin. Agnes (Andersson), riddled with cancer, is dying in the family mansion, cared for by the faithful old retainer. Her two sisters (One frigid and suicidal and the other earthy and reckless) return home to give her comfort. Their reunion is one of the most stunning visual experiences ever filmed, and masterfully expresses Agnes's agony and her sisters reaction. Cinematographer Sven Nykvist won the Oscar for Best Cinematography.
