contracting AIDS, commits to celibacy. But when he discovers how difficult
it is to stay celibate, he is forced to confront the issues he tried to

An American expatriate in Paris (Brando) tries purging himself of bad
memories after his wife's suicide by enetring into a "no questions asked"
sexual liason with a chance acquaintance (Schneider) which ultimately
proves to be even more destructive than his past memories. One of the most
controversial films of its time, it is still explicit by today's standards.
