Vertigo (1958) Alfred Hitchcock's classic thriller has a San Francisco police detective (James Stewart) drawn into a complex plot when a friend hires him for a routine assignment. As Hitchcock obscures the boundary between reality and illusion, the detective's obsession with Madeleine (Kim Novak) takes him to the brink of insanity.

The Color Purple (1985) Steven Spielburg directs Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, and Oprah Winfrey in this evocative story of a girl growing up in the 1900's. We watch thirty years of her life, of the men in her life, and of the way they treat her. Nominated for numerous Academy Awards, including best picture, best actress, and best supporting actress.
